It's a social experiment framing, which is the slightly maddening thing, right?
So this isn't a Survivor thing.
This extends to reality game shows of all kinds.
But either you say this is a social experiment and that licenses...
a great deal of unpleasantness because regular society is unpleasant.
That's one thing.
If that's the story, how is it then acceptable to gerrymander the game to produce like a more egalitarian representative or otherwise politically satisfying outcome?
discussions about this kind of stuff often seem to be like trying to have it both ways to me and i feel it makes me very uncomfortable it kind of leans into the core uncomfortable thing about this entire genre of television which is like is it real for the people or is it a game for the people if it's just a game then it's just a game and you can say look this is a game that we're playing which surfaces unpleasant behavior and is gonna become an incident of
a lot of you know horrible qualities it's going to highlight a lot of horrible social behavior that people are prone to and that's kind of the point and here's what we can take from that but they say oh no it turns out you know society is unpleasant and is hard and doesn't necessarily make for very satisfying television so let's try and gerrymander it but then you lose the excuse for why the show is horrible in the first place
My final thought is if you're going to love Survivor, you probably already love Survivor and you know that you love Survivor.
I would say for anyone else who doesn't already love Survivor, just watch a recap video for a later season because it's a genuinely mind-altering experience.
