He took it upon himself, actually, Dr. Martland, he took it upon himself to help prove that these young women were being poisoned by radium in the paint that they were working with and that it was the cause of their suffering and eventual deaths.
Dr. Martlin was able to show that radium outside of the body is enough to burn, obviously, like we've seen, and cause harm.
