I do find this next bit interesting.

Denethor is described in the text as proud, and then Tolkien immediately says, but hey, wait a minute, it's okay.

He's quick to explain.

This isn't like just a personal pride.

It's a pride of his nation and his people.

But you can still see a little bit of that pride in there because fate has deemed me to be the one in charge at this time.

There's very much like, okay, I love my people, but I love my people because I am over them.

Yeah.

There are elements of it that are wholesome, right?

You want, as the leader of your, your people, you want to be proud of your country.

Yeah, that's right.

I mean, sure, he guessed, and rightly so, that the Ithil stone had been captured, that Sauron had it, or maybe the Witch-King had it.

Still, nobody good had it.

But he trusted his strength and rolled the dice, right?

And that's where Tolkien says again, not entirely unjustified.

This is a guy who Tolkien is saying is strong enough –

And has reason to believe he could handle this.

And really, for a long time, he did, didn't he?
