So donations are absolutely crucial for saving the lives of premature babies in some instances, which is why I feel conflicted about the kind of open market, which treats breast milk as this commodity, which could go to a baby in need, or it could go to a man.
Because on the one hand, I feel like,
Look, as long as a baby isn't being deprived, if a lactating mother at home has got enough for her baby and she's got this excess, who am I to say where she sells it or who she sells it to or whether she donates it?
You know, I think we expect a lot more altruism of women than we do of men.
And I think that's another stigma that kind of plays into all of this is that we're like, what kind of mother sells her milk?
Like, surely she would want to donate it to a hospital, right?
And actually, that woman is probably excluded from the labor market.
It's a way for her to remain at home with her baby and make some money on the side to support her family.
Who am I to say she shouldn't be doing that?
And if that means selling to men, maybe that just means selling to men.
On the other hand, I have seen how...
important from a health perspective donated breast milk is and how dependent on donations hospital milk banks are.
So it's difficult for me to keep that entirely out of my mind.
If I thought that the private online market was so big that it was seriously threatening donations to the non-profit sector, I'd be more worried.
I think even though it's much bigger than I expected, this online market,
I instinctively, I don't feel like it's leeching those nonprofit donations personally, but I might be wrong.
I'm not an expert.
That's the thing.
