I don't think this is necessarily a new worry.
I think for three or four years there have been reports, sometimes cast as blasphemy, that the financing of AI, to the tune of these trillions of dollars that you've just described, is perhaps not sustainable and perhaps is not going to create the kinds of products that really meet a two, three, four Goldman Sachs thinks seven trillion dollar valuation.
But most recently there have been a couple of
Additional sort of judders to the system, and most notably the release of China.
You will remember 12 months ago we had this deep-seek moment where a Chinese AI lab released a piece of technology that was seen as suddenly closing the gap between the US and China, and obviously China trying to release its AI models cheaply, more broadly, and so on.
And that is a threat to these AI laboratories that prop up so much of
the uh the current sort of stock market in the US.
It is extraordinarily concentrated in the hands of of a handful of technology companies when it comes to the US stock market.
Any threat to that position in terms of the global tech race is gonna have some kind of reverberation through the stock market.
There has been an ambition for an awful long time, I think, within Silicon Valley to find this next sort of civilizational technology.
To some extent, I think we saw that with social media.
It exploded and rewired everything from the way that we communicated with one another, that we learned about the world, and then it threw into how we do our politics and how we organize society and all the rest of it, right?
And I think since then, I would almost suggest there have been some false starts.
I don't know if listeners remember the
Metaverse, which I think Meta put seventy billion dollars into.
Of course there was cryptocurrency.
Mark Zuckerberg hoped that we could all do meetings where we would send virtual avatars to them.
But realistically, it didn't come good as a $70 billion investment, which is an extraordinary amount of money to think about it.
By comparison, by the way, the UK's sovereign AI push at the moment is about a billion dollars.
