So in general, if you take a step back, Bitcoin began as this anarchist libertarian project to set up a form of money that was outside of the control of regulators and unmediated by Wall Street.
But what's kind of happened over time is it turned out that people are not very comfortable dealing with a currency that isn't regulated and doesn't have these sort of trusted intermediaries.
And so you've had players come in that offer different ways to access the Bitcoin markets in a more regulated way.
And that's kind of what ICE is doing here.
What's happened so far is a building block in a grander project that ICE wants to do.
And I guess it's mainly aimed at solving one particular problem with Bitcoin, which is the volatility.
Bitcoin doesn't really have any particular clear model driving its price swings.
It'll go up and down and nobody really knows why.
There's a lot of suspicion that it's being manipulated.
It's true.
And to be fair, the volatility has come down a little bit, but it seems to be a big risk on people's minds.
And with a futures contract, you can hedge against those price risks more effectively.
And with the way that ICE is going about creating this Bakkt future, Bakkt is the name of their Bitcoin venture,
they'll potentially make it easier for merchants to hedge the risk of holding Bitcoin and transition quickly between dollars and Bitcoins.
So ICE announced this Bakkt venture last year.
It's spelled B-A-K-K-T, but pronounced Bakkt.
And the idea is that it will be the sort of Bitcoin services company that includes this futures market and physical Bitcoin delivery mechanism that they call a warehouse at its center.
