And ultimately, the idea is to make it easier for people to buy stuff in Bitcoin, including lattes at Starbucks.
There's nothing about the way that Bax has been created right now that would preclude ICE from adding new cryptocurrencies to it.
So you could see them taking this model and this technology and applying it to other coins.
There are a lot of coins out there.
And yes, at some point there may be Libra, which is the coin that Facebook wants to do.
It's interesting because both ventures, both Facebook's Libra and ICE's backed venture, are ultimately aimed at the same goal, which is to allow Bitcoin or to allow cryptocurrencies to be used for payments between ordinary people.
And I think that both are kind of an example of a big established player in the corporate world right now trying to figure out how to get out of this trend.
So on Monday, August 5th, the New York Stock Exchange began upgrading the technology for its flagship exchange, which is simply called the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE.
And specifically for stocks that are listed on the NYSE.
So when this process is done, it will include stocks like Boeing or ExxonMobil and many other household names.
And it's called Pillar.
The overall technology overhaul is called Pillar and it's been going on for at least four years.
When the NYSE first announced it was going to do this, the NYSE, while best known as just being one stock exchange, is actually a family of now five different equities exchanges and two options exchanges.
And the Pillar project is designed to put all of them on the same up-to-date technology.
Exactly.
There are a few things going on here, but one of the most important aspects of this whole technology process to make all the exchanges faster.
If you are a high-frequency trader, when you send the exchange an order to buy or sell a stock, you want them to process that as quickly as possible.
And it's very important for the exchange to process it in a small amount of time, a tiny fraction of a second, and ideally, you know, have that be very consistent.
So it's not like sometimes it'll take 50 microseconds and sometimes it'll take 500 microseconds.
You want it to be very predictable.
