And so it caused this big blip in the crypto market and briefly erased potentially $100 billion in value from many of the major cryptocurrencies before people figured out what was going on.
There was not really a change, just a change in the data.
It would be much better than minute-by-minute, actually.
They say real-time and low latency, which means it's probably second-by-second or less, although I don't have exact numbers, so I can't tell you.
But, yeah, basically one of the things that they're doing that no other data services does yet is provide what is called order book information from different Bitcoin exchanges around the world.
So you would be able to see how many orders there are to buy or sell Bitcoin at different prices at any given time.
And this is the sort of very granular data that high frequency traders and quant hedge funds will use.
So Blockstream is a fairly reputable Bitcoin and blockchain-focused startup.
It has some of the earliest Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies developers on its team.
And they do various sort of infrastructure projects, sort of basically professionalize the Bitcoin data space.
The most exciting thing they do, this wasn't actually mentioned in my article, is they have leased bandwidth from a network of satellites.

Well, there are a few things about it.
First of all, this could help entice more Wall Street firms and sort of professional traders to trade Bitcoin, because the kind of data that ICE will be supplying just plugs into their systems very well.
Another significant outcome of this, to my mind, we'll see if this really happens, but this could help narrow some of the spreads we've seen between different Bitcoin exchanges.

There is a phenomenon that we see, especially in times of market stress, when Bitcoin is moving up or down radically, that prices will be quite different at the same point in time on different exchanges.
If you have one unified data feed pulling all this stuff together and allowing people to trade on that data, it stands to reason that those sort of arbitrage opportunities will go away.
Yes.
But by the same token, fewer opportunities, because if you can buy Bitcoin for a price 10% higher on one exchange than the other one, you can make a profit out of that.
