So I I've had a interest in uh astronomy for for years.
I actually started in school uh in uh in physics with the idea that I was gonna study astronomy.
Um and I was working on a book on ancient astronomy, um which came out actually a couple years ago now, um, and and discovered the uh the early Maya.
Um and because there was a lot of uh
There's a lot of discussion of uh astronomy in the in the Maya texts that are available now, such as the uh that we have today, such as the Dresden Codex.
Um and as I was looking at Maya astronomy, I kept thinking it would be really cool if there was a philosophical um if there was philosophical thought in early in in the Maya tradition as well.
But I kind of despaired that, well, that we don't have the text, right?
They're gone and and there is no philosophical tradition.
Um and the more I learned, I was I
started reading about the Maya and work that um uh anthropologists have done on the Maya, and the more I learned about it, I learned there there is a philosophical tradition um in in Maya Maya thought.
Um not only in uh in the texts that are available, such as the the four um
uh c codices, the pre the post classic codices from before Spanish contact, but also in post contact texts that um that recount kind of earlier stories, and also in oral traditions, and also in on kind of on stele and and and through kind of uh constructions uh like buildings and things like this and other other aspects of the culture.
There's a rich philosophical tradition that we can uh that we can see operative there.
And
Anthropologists have actually uh discussed some of this, right?
And some of the work they've they've written have have have uh have gotten into the issue of Maya philosophy.
And so I thought that, you know, this is this is something that philosophers aren't working on, in part because we don't know it's there.
Um and so that was kind that kind of really sent me down the the path of of of trying to to learn as much as I could about the Maya and uh and then develop what and eventually became this book.
Sure.
So the um the people that that I'm discussing in the book, uh the the Maya people, um uh are still there today.
