Um, where we deliberately make children unhappy in order to change their behaviour and make them
um come round to do whatever it is we want.
For example
forcibly isolating young children when they need us most.
course that sounds unpleasant, so we prefer a euphemism like time out.
Which makes us feel better about making kids feel terrible.
So in the book I try to talk about why we need to move away from rewards and punishments.
And more importantly, why we need to shift
not only the methods we use or techniques, but far more radically and important
Um, to shift our focus.
to what children need and not on
new slicker, jazier ways to control them.
in order that we can help
meet the very goals we ourselves have for our children in the long term.
