I had to shut my eyes and open them slowly, in an attempt to adjust my pupils to the blaring bulbs.

I had no idea how long I'd been unaware of my surroundings.

It could have been hours or just a few minutes.

It was impossible to tell.

When I opened my eyes again, they fell on the three flaking tally marks, crooked and small.

I want to go home, I said quietly, a voice raspy and loud in the silent room.

The only other noise, the soft lapping of the water in the pool.

I wept, attempting to straighten myself to a standing position, head lolling forward.
