We've been studying pregnant women from early pregnancy and following the children with a focus on behavioral problems.
Yes, we have samples in Sweden and in Finland.
And the focus has been on smoking, alcohol, maternal distress, stress, depression, and so forth.
Women who perceive a lot of stress during pregnancy have a higher risk of having children who are high on ADHD-type symptoms.
But I do stress this is a risk factor.
It doesn't mean that it's guaranteed.

Our research, though, is prospective.
We first start in the pregnancy and wait and look forward in time instead of asking people retrospectively to tell us what happened in pregnancy.
That's a very good question.
There's actually not that much prospective research in pregnancy that's large enough to look at these critical windows.
There's been an interest in handedness for a long time.
And what people have been finding is that difficulties don't lie in the left-handed, but rather in the mixed-handed group.
with dyslexia, with schizophrenia, and we previously also found it with ADHD symptoms in children who were five years old.
What we found was that mothers who had been distressed during pregnancy had a higher risk of having a child who was mixed-handed.
And then that child, in turn, also had a higher risk of having behavioral problems if he or she was mixed-handed.
And so this gives us a mechanism to kind of answer the question, how is it that maternal distress is affecting the brain of the fetus, and then how that disturbance in the brain is leading to behavioral problems.
One theory is that neurons are perhaps misplaced during fetal development in mothers who have been distressed.
But that's just a theory.
