In this study, we continued to see in another group of children who were a bit older, they were eight, because in the five-year-olds, you could say, well, perhaps they're not completely developed.
And actually, we found that the late developers in that study also had more problems.
The handedness, exactly.
And most children developed handedness between one and two years old.
But those who were between three and four were showing higher degree of difficulties.
And those, of course, of five who were mixed handed had the greatest.
Nonetheless, it is possible that this effect might just wear off with development.
So we were interested to see in an older group how it was.
So we studied children who were eight and studied the same children again when they were 16 as adolescents.
Well, we found that indeed children who were mixed-handed had more difficulties with language, as reported by parents and teachers, and as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms.
When we examined them at 16, then it was these children who were having consistently more difficulties.
Not only that, but the ones who had the highest symptoms were the mixed-handed children.
I think that it carries a lot of value in trying to understand the causes of ADHD.
And if we can find out what's happening in the brain, then that's going to tell us more about the causes and more about prevention.
