Keep in mind, Oprah, that when I was writing this, I mean, the world was and continues to be just in a place of real division and mean-spiritedness.

That's my interpretation of it.

And it felt like a story of kindness might serve us well.

Again, I was not writing for an audience, but I did have in mind if someone were to read this manuscript, what might I like them to take from it?

So I was trying to appeal to the better angels of our nature.

And who doesn't like to be told that there is something really wonderful about their life?

And not in a superficial or pretentious sort of way.

And the old man seemed to have a real superpower at doing that.

And every time he gave a portrait, before he actually put it in their hands, he would say, this is who I see in this face.

I did, I did, constantly.
