I just could not, I could not get a story to form, but I just stayed with it.

And by the time I had finished what I think now has become the book, there were lots of sections that needed to be cut.

So I took those out.

I think I edited them.

Yeah, it was pure instinct.

And so I took probably 100 pages of text out of the book and just hoped that what was left behind would constitute a story.

Pretty early on.

Once I realized I don't have a story and then started trying to conjure up something of a narrative, you know, a narrative arc.

I had a little more definition within which to work.

Yeah.

But...

Once I made the choice, okay, this is going to kind of be the flow of the story, then the ending came real quickly.

What is it about the river?

Yeah.

And the river is prominent.

It actually almost takes the place of a character itself.

Well, Golden is its own character.

That's right.

And it's on a river.

I call it the Oxbow River.
