is not going to come and buy their fast food burger if they don't have an extra incentive.
So you're seeing a lot more deals, promotions out there to lure these consumers because they are being a lot more choosy and picky and selective as the higher cost for essentials eats into their budgets.
It's looking at your budget and really trying to figure out, okay, how much do I need to save so that I have a little bit of an emergency cushion?
You have your essential items that you have to spend money on.
How much more has that gone up?
And how can you try and finagle it a little bit so that you are still saving?
And then, again, those discretionary purchases.
I just think those are items that people are pulling back on.
Maybe they're not going to go and purchase a new car.
Maybe they're going to hold out and wait for...
end of summer deals when it comes to certain clothing items.
Those are all little ways that consumers can try and get around higher costs elsewhere.
But there's a broader impact here when you think about the midterms coming up.
I mean, this is all top of mind for voters heading into the fall, and that's going to have a larger term ripple effect when it comes to who's in Congress and who ultimately gets elected.
So there's just so many layers to this.
And the inflationary spiral is more than just the war in Iran.
It's tariffs.
It's so many things that the consumer is dealing with right now.
And that's why, even though a lot of the labor market data is pretty solid and inflation data has been stabilizing, it's when you talk to everyday Americans, everyday people, they're not feeling any of that relief.
