If you know that you're going to have to have car repairs over and over again, which everyone usually does if you're keeping cars long enough, maybe it's time to look into setting up a sinking fund for car maintenance.
That is something you could do.
Another example is medical bills.
Earlier in 2025, my youngest son broke his jaw.
And with that came a lot of medical bills.
And I know that those medical bills, well, really dental bills, those dental bills are not over.
We have not seen the last of them because he still will have dental work in the future.
So what I could do and what I should do, what I have not done, but I said I would, and now I need to follow through on it,
is set up a dental sinking fund, basically a sinking fund where we send even $100 a month, like $100 a month is still good money, send it over to a separate high-yield savings account where we can just start saving money because we know that that expense, those costs are going to come up.
That way, when they do happen and we are faced with those dental costs,
visits, those dental procedures that do cost money, we can use money from our sinking fund instead of pulling money from our emergency fund.
It's like we've given special money just to this one purpose.
So if you see that you are spending money on emergencies that are recurring or have the same theme, it might be time to set up a sinking fund for those things.
The second tip is to set a realistic rebuild goal.
Let's say that you had $5,000 in your emergency fund and you drained it all the way down to $1,000.
You want to rebuild it back up to $5,000.
It can be really easy to say, okay, I'm giving myself one month.
One month, I need to put $4,000 into a Samy's account.
Ready, set, let's go.
Look, that is a recipe for burnout and honestly, failure, especially if you don't make enough money.
