And I said, well, maybe, you know, let's try.
We have to try.
I'm a forensic investigative genetic genealogist.
We do unidentified subject investigations for lots of different kinds of cases.
We work with trafficking victims.
We work with medical examiners.
You know, we subcontract out the lab work to whatever lab we think is going to be the best for each case.
So I knew that if there was any chance of getting a usable sample, it was going to be from the ancient DNA experts at Astraea Forensics in Santa Cruz, California.
And we knew we had also done cases with the Richland County Coroner's Office using Astraea's lab work.
So I just said, you know, let's trial it.
They create what's called a genotype file, and that is essentially the type of file that's generated by any kind of direct-to-consumer test when somebody spits in a tube.
And they give it to us, and we upload it to GEDmatch and to Family Tree DNA, which are the only two databases that allow forensic uploads.
And so once we do that, we evaluate the returns.
You know, the common sense in our industry says that each time the DNA is halved, and that's what happens with each generation, you know, when someone has a child.
And then that child's child gets 25%, and then you go down to 12.5%.
And so by the time you've gone nine generations, a lot of people expected that there might not be enough to really do anything with, and they were wrong.
In this case, we had 20,000 matches for each of the soldiers, and that was just unheard of.
At some point when we began on this case and started looking at the depth of the data that we had to analyze, we went ahead.
