We thought they'd want to know that they might be related to Revolutionary War soldiers.
So we wrote to his top 250 matches in both databases.
And we had then we also had some some stories air in the media.
And between those two things, we had at least 800 people that registered for the project, shared their family tree, told us what they knew about anybody they had in their family that was at Camden.
OK, so I think most of y'all here know why we're here.
His name is John Pumphrey, and he was a private in the 7th Maryland Regiment.
Yeah, I think that deserves applause.
And, you know, John Pumphrey's been talking to us for a long time.
So John Humphrey was one of the younger boys to enlist in the Maryland line.
According to our anthropologist, he was as young as 16 to 18 when he died in 1780, but he enlisted in 1777, January 5th.
So that means he was 13 to 15 years old when he enlisted.
So he initially signed up for three years.
In 1779, Richard Anderson, the commander of the 7th Maryland Regiment at the time, gave him a $100 bonus to re-enlist to serve throughout the rest of the war.
And $100 in 1779 was like thousands of dollars.
I mean, that could have changed his life, but unfortunately it ended up being a fateful choice.
We've had a lot of funding issues because it's incredibly expensive work and it's taken five or six different organizations to make it happen.
And so there have been times we had to set it aside.
And so we did set the second soldier aside because he wasn't showing yet the promise that John Pumphrey's case was.
But the second soldier, he's called 11A, and I'm related to him.
So we will be finding his name eventually.
