Yeah, and your practice does both, right?
We hear about cognitive behavioral therapy being available more widely, but targeted for IBS as well as the gut-directed hypnotherapy.
And those are the two main, maybe only evidence-based strategies for the gut-brain access in IBS, right?
Yeah, that makes sense.
Okay, so let's talk about why things flare up this time of year.
I think first we think about food, right?
And that is part of it.
But during the holidays, what I see over and over again is that it's not just the food that causes gut issues.
It's the changes in your rhythm and your routine.
Your gut likes predictability.
It's very pattern driven.
And when you travel, stay up later or out of your normal schedule, skip meals, eat at different times, that rhythm gets disrupted.
And when the body doesn't know what's coming next, motility can slow down or change.
You can get more bloating.
Your bowel habits can become less predictable.
Larger, richer meals definitely do play a role.
And especially when you combine that with
heavier foods than you normally eat, more sugar, alcohol, especially over consecutive days in a row, you're giving your gut a much larger load to process than what it's used to.
So we're not saying you can't enjoy these things or you can't enjoy the holidays, but it does explain why
pressure can build up, we can get more reflux, we can feel overly full or bloated, more so during this time of year.
