So, hi, my name is AB.
I'm a 32 year old black woman, mixed race black woman adopted by an entirely white family.
And I am now in my early thirties, finally starting to understand what it means to be a black woman in America.
Okay, and I do wonder what she means by that.
podcast-host
What does it mean to be a black woman in America?
podcast-host
Why so much emphasis on the fact that you were adopted by an entirely white family as if that somehow matters?
podcast-host
I mean, apparently to her, it does matter.
podcast-host
We're going to hear more about her experience and the internalized racism that this family subjected her to.
podcast-host
But do you not feel as though maybe they feel a little bit abandoned?
podcast-host
Maybe they're experiencing a little bit of grief given you coming to the table and saying, you guys are racist, please acknowledge it.
podcast-host
And please do some anti-racism work or you do not have a relationship with me.
podcast-host
I imagine they're going through a little bit of suffering right now, given that they took care of you, raised you into your adulthood, and now you're throwing racism allegations right in their face.
podcast-host
In all fairness, I'm sure there's much that coincides with being adopted and there's grief and sadness and sorrow that can coincide with that.
podcast-host
At least she says in her experience, that has been the case.
podcast-host
But the racial part of this is a whole nother thing.
podcast-host
One of the least racist things you could possibly do in your lifetime is adopt a kid of a different race.
podcast-host
That is not the thing that racists tend to do.
podcast-host
But I think you could grow up as an adopted child in a family that is predominantly white or entirely white, as she states, and notice this difference.
podcast-host
And there will be people there ready to prey upon that difference.
podcast-host
And I think that's what she's speaking to when she says she's learned about what it means to be a black woman in America.
