Now, Thomas lives in Wellington and takes public transport to work, joining the 130,000 other Kiwis who do the same.

But really, is that enough people to sway an election?
You just touched on fuel prices.
I mean, the war in Iran and the impact it's had on prices.
I mean, is that working in Labour's favour to sort of maybe get more people on trains and buses and think, well, actually, you're giving me a deal here.
I might give you a vote.
And also, the public transport networks that we do have in the big cities, I mean, they're already under pressure.
Could this create some sort of capacity problems if ridership surges?
As Thomas mentioned, we are a car-loving nation.
So would Labour's cap on fares be enough to catapult us onto public transport?
Tim Welch is a senior lecturer at Auckland University who specialises in transportation, infrastructure and urban modelling.
I asked for his take on Labour's policy.
It's interesting.
When it came out, everyone was like, this sounds brilliant.
But is there actually any evidence that cheaper public transport actually encourages more people to leave their cars at home?
Because let's face it, Tim, we are a car-loving nation.
So if prices do come down, because some of the other issues I think we face is reliability, frequency, coverage of where they go, what pressures will it put on the other things that go wrong with our system?
So if we get a whole lot more people on these buses, this is what I'm praying for because I hate traffic.
