I want to understand this more as a community, because if we're trying to understand it as a cult, I think there needs to be a community element.
And certainly plenty of modern-day cult communities, though not all of them, have some kind of leader or figurehead.
Who do you think fulfills the cult leader role in the dark tourism industry?
Is it the tour guides?
Is it travel influenced?
True crime media, social media algorithms rewarding the most shocking content, or is the leader just humanity's endless appetite for proximity to horror?

I mean, we all have like our ethical boundaries with regard to dark tourism, I think, but like I feel like being on a resort in Mexico where like mostly citizens of that country are taking care of white people, I think that is dark tourism.

So this is interesting because I've been trying to understand how this cult differs from, say, the cult of like extreme sports people, like the Alex Hunnold types, who's that free solo rock climber dude who like doesn't fear death, or like white people who go on safari in Africa and like don't appreciate the wilderness and like think it's Disneyland or whatever.
And I think the pseudo-education.
Pseudo-intellectual false promise or like delusion is a key ingredient that separates this cult from those others.
