apparently why the falling might have been brought in because falling was an idea of curtsying as well.

So the idea of bowing or falling in front of somebody was not about falling down, but about bowing down.

So that the fall may have been misinterpreted because people weren't necessarily curtsying to each other in that century.

So Kate Greenaway was an illustrator and she was the daughter of John Greenaway, who was an engraver, an illustrator, who actually engraved for Charles Dickens' Pickwick Papers, for example, quite famously.

She was also the daughter of Elizabeth, who was married to John, and Elizabeth was a sort of entrepreneur.

So there was this idea in their family, I suppose, of art, but also of commerce and of being creative.

A woman with some kind of agency and some control over what she was doing.

And as a woman in the 1800s, you know, very unusual really to be so encouraged by her father and to be so allowed and encouraged by her mother actually saving up money through her own business to send her to art school.

When she was only 13, she started going to art lessons.

She was fascinated by her dad and his work.

And he'd often have to work all through the night as an engraver because he'd be working for newspapers, particularly for the Illustrated, London News.

So he'd have to get something done to a quick deadline.

So he'd work through the night.

And Kate liked to get up early or stay up late.

and make him tea and toast and watch him work and then to work alongside him as well.

So there was this kind of engendering of that allowance to be an artist from a very, very early age.

And she was very fortunate, I think, in that.

This sort of face of a cherubic child with sort of perfect, beautiful eyes, beautiful little rosebud lips, a very full face often, sometimes in profile with a beautiful sort of eloquent kind of line to that profile.

Very neat, very well turned out, beautiful, beautiful clothes, very subtle colour palette, not heightened colour at all, something that's quite demure.

A lot of greens and browns and sort of russety colours, beautiful rose colours as well.
