So he's a kind of cross party kind of guy. matched
We're running through some of my favourite episodes and our most intriguing and thought provoking guests. matched
On to, well, this was definitely one of my favourites. matched
It was brilliant. matched
And God, the response that we got. matched
to this podcast episode was nuts. matched
It was Eliza Philby, Dr. Eliza Philby, the historian and author of a book which I really recommend called Inheritocracy. matched
She gave us one of the clearest diagnoses of why so many people in this country feel the future has moved out of reach. matched
And I really, really love this episode because frankly, Eliza, a bit like me, is someone who is much more interested in trends and underlying forces than events. matched
And she's thought hard about them. matched
And her argument was pretty radical, I think, because it challenged the old promise that hard work and education are enough. matched
She basically said that young people in this country, by which she meant millennials or younger people, Generation Z, or Gen Z as we call them, have the odds stacked against them. matched
The decisive advantage is now not what you earn or learn... matched
but what your family owns. matched
That's the idea behind Inheritocracy. matched
And she said that if you look at the way that pay, what you earn by going to work, property, your chances of owning a home, pensions, your chance of actually having a decent pension when you retire. matched
If you look at how those three Ps have changed in the past 40 years, we have really stacked the odds against young people. matched
And this episode was just fantastic, really, at laying out all the ways in which, frankly, an older generation, in her view, had an matched
easier chance to have a great quality of life than the younger people who they call family. matched
I loved your book. matched
