I think you get an out-of-touch media class for their audiences and I think you're seeing that reflected in declining audience and declining trust in media in general.
I mean, when you have journalists who are of the same class of the people that they're reporting on,
if they have the same networks, if they socialise together, if they went to university together, if they're able to say, oh, you know, I know blah, blah in Labor or the Liberal Party because we were, you know, in the young Liberal clubs together at university or young Labor or, you know, I knew them since they were working at one of the big four consulting firms or I was at, you know, ex-think tank or ex, you know, government department like Treasury or Foreign Affairs with them beforehand, yada, yada, yada.
How do you hold that person to an account in the same way that you would hold somebody that you're coming in completely fresh with?
Because you've already got a history.
So I think that that is increasingly becoming a problem.
It's also increasingly meaning that
Media does not understand the issues that they're reporting on because they're seeing it through a lens of privilege that their audiences don't experience.
And I truly think that that is part of the reason for the fracturing that we're seeing in the social fabric and also the fracturing that we're seeing in media trust today.
Because if you are only focused on the politics of an issue and not on how this is actually impacting communities, how it's impacting people, families, students, migrants, you know, you name it, then you're missing a really big part of the story.
Not only missing it, you're never actually addressing it.
You're so focused on whatever it is that's floating to the top.
You're not actually seeing what's happening in those undercurrents.
Yeah, it's that disconnect, I think, from the rest of Australia.
And it's not that Canberra is a bubble.
It's that Parliament House is a bubble.
You know, it's so far away from everything.
It's got a gym.
It's got, you know, like, you know, a couple of cafes.
You can't leave it.
