She had been born in war on the run.

She had had to flee Lithuania with just my father.

She had lost her family.

She had lost her home that she had built in Australia to the Ash Wednesday fires.

And she just kept rebuilding.

And she would often just have a very Lithuanian view of the world where she would sit there with a cigarette and a glass of brandy and make me watch the world news with subtitles.

And she would just say, you can always tell when the Nazis will come back because the financial markets will crash forever.

financial markets will crash and then the Nazis will be back.

And she often warned about the return of fascism.

She would just sit there and just say, like, you're going, in your lifetime, you are going to see the return of fascism and you need to be able to spot that and you need to be able to work out how to navigate it and try to make things better.

And so having those two competing viewpoints, you know, as a young child and as a teenager really informed how I saw the world.

And I'm not the brightest person.

I was not academically inclined.

I'm not particularly smart.

I'm not very well read.

I'm public school educated.

I just have a bachelor degrees in journalism and that was a massive struggle.

And I've had to fight and scrap and, you know,

shoulder my way in pretty much every space that I've ever come to.

But I've always done it because I just think, well, you know, there should be more people like me.
