And so when he came to the election that he won 1996, because I think a lot of people forget that John Howard was a perennial loser before he won 1996.
And the Liberals only went to him because they were desperate at that point.
And he won that election not because John Howard, Little Honest John, as he was, you know, called, was so popular.
It was because Paul Keating was so unpopular.

Australia had been through a recession.
You know, Australia was kind of being dragged into a social reckoning in terms of like Indigenous reconciliation, moving away from America and Britain and placing Australia in our geographical zone of Asia.
A lot of people were very uncomfortable with the way that Paul Keating was taking Australia.
So Paul Keating was so unpopular, he lost that election.
And John Howard just happened to be like the Liberal leader at the time.
He ran to that election saying, oh, I take back everything that I've said about Medicare.
I understand that Australians, you know, really like Medicare now.
But he never forgot his hatred of it.
He just...
did everything in this sideways way.
So he never came at things directly.
He always came at them from the side.
So Medicare is a great example because he didn't stop funding Medicare.
He didn't scrap it.
But what he did do was create the private health subsidy where you were incentivised to take up private health.
