When you just think, oh, the Liberal Party is falling off a cliff, that's because of how John Howard ran the Liberal Party and how he had everybody in the Liberal Party fighting each other while ensuring that moderates, while they could talk about policy, could never actually lead on it.

It drives me insane.

The myth just needs to end.

I think people really believe the story you tell them and John Howard and the Liberal Party have always told an amazing story about John Howard and the Liberal Party.

And John Howard was so devastatingly average and

that it seemed that he couldn't be the person who wielded power so comprehensively that he changed Australia for three decades.

It just seems like, oh, he was the bumbling guy with the eyebrows who, you know, found it difficult to put a sentence together.

But he was so focused on creating the Australia that he wanted.

And John Howard knew how to use power everywhere.

And he did.

He never asked permission for it.

He didn't seek bipartisan support.

He didn't go to Labor and the unions and say, you know, I want to completely get rid of everybody's work protections and completely change industrial relations in this country.

Is that OK?

He just did it.

And he did it in a way of dividing and conquering.

So he captured Labor's working class quite comprehensively.

And he did that through, you know, his tax breaks, but also allowing people to lean into some of their worst impulses.

He bemoaned political correctness, which was the 1990s version of woke.

And it just really allowed working class and middle class white Australians to feel comfortable with their discomfort about where Australia was going in terms of social progressivism.
