But Pauline Hanson was a liberal in the Howard mould.
She started in the Liberal Party.
She was kicked out of her branch of the Liberal Party in Queensland just before the 1996 election for comments she had made about Indigenous people.
She would not have been kicked out of the Liberal Party under John Howard's leadership of the Liberal Party because, you know, by the time that John Howard took hold, those sorts of comments were just free speech.
But in 1996, the Liberals still were very uncomfortable with open racism and they were uncomfortable with somebody espousing, you know, comments about Indigenous people getting things for free, which is certainly not the Liberal Party of today.
And so she was kicked out, but her name was still on the ballot as, you know, a Liberal Party candidate, even though she was running as an independent.
Australia was so angry at Paul Keating, who was like moving towards reconciliation.
They were so angry at the interest rates.
It was about 18% at the time.
so angry at the recession that we had to have.
Pauline Hanson walking around working class Ipswich saying that, you know, all of these people are getting something you're not and it's because of a political correct government really resonated.
People were angry.
She romped it in.
And then John Howard listened to her first speech where she famously said that Australia was being swamped by Asians and he did not condemn it.
He waited about two weeks and he did a speech where he didn't address Pauline Hanson, but he just was like, isn't it great that that veil of political correctness has lifted and people are now able to say things that maybe they've been afraid to say for so long?
And that was just tactic approval of Pauline Hanson and her rhetoric.
And John Howard really was kind of like, yep, let this ride.
Then came the 1998 Queensland election where she absolutely romped it in.
They won, I think it was 10 or 11 seats in the Queensland parliament.
John Howard started to panic because he had a federal election coming up and he was like, holy shit, she's going to start taking from our seats, from our electorates.
