When the storage is somewhere where it can get dusty or somewhere where it can be seen, I will use a lid only because I have to.
But otherwise, it's no lids for me because I want to reduce that barrier to putting things away.
So another thing you might think about is like, how do I naturally reach for this item?
So if you go into a drawer, you might not need drawer dividers if you're functionally organizing.
You might just know that in that drawer, I just have what I need and I don't need to have it separated out.
I just go in there, I grab what I need.
You might have a leggings drawer in your wardrobe and all the leggings go in.
That might be functionally organized.
But if you're someone who needs to know, no, I want to be able to grab the thicker ones or the thinner ones or the longer ones or the shorter ones or the patterned ones or the plain ones, you might go for a little bit more aesthetically pleasing organizing by having them categorized and maybe folded a bit differently.
That's going to look different whether you go functional or aesthetic.
Another example is you might have your dishes and they all just get stacked up and you don't mind whether it's two different sets combined.
Functionally, all the dishes are in one place.
Whereas aesthetically, you might actually say, no, I just want all of the one type of plate so it looks nice as well.
And that's me in that case.
So I want all of my bowls and plates and cups and everything to match so that when I put it away and I open the drawer, it actually looks nice.
I find that is a really nice way to have my drawers.
Whereas with my clothes, I care a little bit less.
In a functional way, you might keep your medications in an open storage container on top of your microwave or on your kitchen bench or on your bedside table or on your desk, maybe on the bathroom sink.
Functionally, that's really good.
You're going to grab them.
