I think so, because his novels and short stories, they all have a dark side because of the plot, characters owning slaves, etc.

And that reflects a characteristic of Brazilian culture and Brazilians nowadays.

If you go to Brazil for the first time, you think everybody's happy.

And if you read these statistics, not really.

Lots of people are not happy, but we are joyful.

So in Brazil, you learn very quickly to distinguish between being joyful and happy.

And I think part of his wit and one contribution for the formation of Brazilian literature is exactly how to convey this very specific, unique Brazilian humor and

into literature, which was then, of course, expanded, incorporated by Lima Barreto, João do Rio, and all the writers that came after him.
