Despite the difficulties between Van Vliet and Zappa, Van Vliet still owed Zappa's label another album, which became Lick My Decals Off Baby.
Its title track was, as well as the obvious dublant tundra, about the removal of labels.
Beefheart didn't want his music to be given labels or descriptions.
He also talked about the licking in question being closer to an animal licking its babies, and about an implication of licking into shape.
Which might also imply that he saw his band members as being something like his children.
The process of writing this album was a little different than the previous one.
Dick Kunk, Zappa's engineer, had fixed Van Vliet's tape recorder, and with French gone from the band he turned the role of musical director over to Harkelroad.
Harkelrode didn't write cheap music, so he had to listen to hours of Van Gliet's tape recordings and transcribe the parts into guitar tablature to teach them to the rest of the band.
With Cotton's departure, for a while the plan became for Ian Underwood, who was a keyboard player, to learn guitar well enough to replace him as second guitarist.
Given that Van Vliet also sang on Hot Rats around this time, and that Underwood, Tripp, and Van Vliet all appeared in various combinations with Zappa in one off shows to promote the album, and that Zappa reportedly stood in for Cotton on at least one of the few shows the Magic Band played in this period, the
And reading between the lines of things that some of those involved have said.
It seems that there was at least some discussion of a permanent band being formed with both Zappa and Beefart performing with various magic band members and ex mothers.
And that this not coming to pass may have led to some of the bad blood between Zappa and Beefheart.
