But this time on Marimba rather than drums, taking on the stage name Ed Marimba.
So the marimba would be the second melody instrument rather than the guitar.
This lineup, Captain Beefart on vocals, Zoot Hornwallow as sole guitarist and musical director, Roquette Morton on bass, Drumbo on Drums, and Ed Marimba on Marimba recorded Lick My Decals Off Baby, the first album to be credited to Captain Beefart and The Magic Band, rather than his magic band.
An important distinction which was made from that point on, and which was meant to show that Van Vliet was being slightly more respectful of his musicians, who were still under his control but no longer living communely with him.
While Lick My Decals Off Baby is by most standards an uncompromising album, and very much in the same style in many respects as Tramp Mask Replica, a close listen shows it as a very slight step back from the difficulty of the previous album, something which would continue with every subsequent release for the next several years.
While tracks like Doctor Dark or Japan in a Dishpan are likely to be greeted by the novice listener with confusion, other tracks are, if not exactly straightforward, not completely unlike anything else.
In part that's because of the lyrics, which often deal with sexual and romantic themes, if at a skewed angle.
A title like I wanna find a woman that'll hold my big toe till I have to go is not exactly I wanna hold your hand, but is closer to it than Dakau Blues is.
It's probably no coincidence that Beefheart's most sexual album came shortly after he got together with his girlfriend Jan, who he would soon marry and stay with for the rest of his life.
Though having said that, while half the album seems to be about sex, the other half seems to be about paleontology, with songs like Petrified Forest and The Smithsonian Institute Blues or The Big Dig.
But then who doesn't like dinosaurs?
But also at least some of the music is more immediately relatable to people whose listening consists of other rock and blues music.
The Boogie Boogie Woogie is a fairly straightforward, if idiosyncratic, blues rock track.
