In the beginning, the sky was yellow and did not change for years on end.
I became me in that yellowness.
At my launch I was one of a hundred copies, some stacked on a table beside a small credit card terminal, others waiting in boxes on the floor.
Booksellers are nothing if not optimistic.
I was signed by my author, whom you might assume I was close to, given that she was with me all through the yellow years.
But here is a little known fact about authors.
They lay themselves down in the middle of the road, quite prepared to be run over by a car or picked apart by birds, all for the sake of a book.
But at the last moment, when they must surely be flattened or picked apart, they stand and walk away, and the book is left alone.
The room where the launch took place was small and crowded.
People chatted, a few laughed raucously.
It was hot and everyone's face shone.
My author sat at a table before which a queue formed.
I was no longer close to her, as I have said.
After finishing me, she turned her back on me.
Yet, as her hand rested on my inside cover as she wrote in me, I knew that I would always be of at hand.
