It had dried by then, and to my astonishment, I thought I'd come back and there'd be a blue bowl on the wall, you know, OK.
It wasn't a blue bowl on the wall.
It was a space full of darkness.
Different things.
It was not an empty space.
It was full.
Rather like some of the works in the show at the Hayward.
So suddenly I thought, what is this?
But you say full.
Full of what?
Colour?
Depth?
Ideas?
Full of darkness.
Precisely, the void.
And then over the next years, I'd started, just started making some works in stone.
And I wondered if I made a negative space in a stone and painted it in this way, could it hold the weight of...
of the stone?
Could it have an equivalence, if you like, with the majesty, the weight, etc., of the stone?
And I made a work called Adam.
