And we often find that even for many taxpayers and in particular small businesses that maybe have spent a bit of time avoiding contacting the ATO, we do get that we're not sort of the snuggly kind organisation that everyone loves to call as soon as possible.
But what we see is that for those who do, there is that sense of relief that
once they have that conversation, there actually is support available that we can provide.
And in fact, the best way that that support can be provided and the most useful method of providing it is if we get that contact early with taxpayers.
If you wait, often, especially if it's about a debt or a payment that you need to make,
It just compounds into something that is a lot harder to recover from.
And very rarely would we see people better off having tried to avoid talking to us in the first instance.
Absolutely.
Give us a call.
Reach out to a registered tax professional is another option as well.
There's lots of people who can give really good advice.
Make sure you are getting that advice from a verified source.
And the other thing I'd say, Sean, is there is lots of information on our website, but also the ATO app can be very helpful as well.
So lots of ways to reach out, get the information you need and get that support if you need it as well during tax time.
Yeah, look, it's a really great question to ask, Sean.
So first of all, what I'd remind everyone, even if you're using a tax agent, ultimately you as a taxpayer are responsible for whatever goes into your tax return.
So as much as possible, the questions you're asking are the right ones in terms of, you know, are you sure that the information that's in there is correct?
The other thing I'd say is that your tax agent should be asking you a lot of questions to make sure that they fully understand your circumstances and your situation to the extent that they can apply their expertise correctly when it comes to lodging your tax return.
And they should be open to you asking questions as well so that they can explain it to you.
So if in doubt, definitely ask those questions.
