One has been on the board for over two decades, and they all are really integrated into the whole system of corrections.

And critics of this legislation were concerned that

The proposal would skew the impartiality of the board.

Having law enforcement professionals and prosecutors adds a new element to the decisions that the board usually makes.

And the legislation also doesn't really account for all of the other responsibilities of the board because they review every single person who leaves Kansas Department of Corrections custody, not just those who are eligible or up for parole.

Some of the other changes included mandating in-person public comment sessions.

They're currently virtual, which, according to KDOC policy, was to make those sessions more accessible, particularly for victims, their families, the offenders' families, and their supporters.

and the general public.

In making parole decisions, the board already considers the crime, criminal history, and a number of other qualifications when determining whether to approve parole or not.

One of those other pieces was capacity within the Kansas Department of Corrections system.

This bill eliminates that consideration, which drew some mixed reactions from folks as well.

As I mentioned, this passed both chambers without opposition in the House and in a 32-7 vote in the Senate.

We're waiting to see if the governor will let it become law or veto it.

And it's important to mention that both of the chambers passed it with a veto-proof majority.

Yeah, that's right.

And these were the first two vetoes and first two veto overrides of the 2026 session.

Except for the anti-trans bill, thank you.

And we're expecting more, all that being said.

So at the time of this recording, those two were the Senate Bill 368, which gives tax deductions for contributions paid into health care sharing ministries.
