and now only 6% of rivers in the UK are actually usable, that they've actually polluted all the water.

In America, they've taken all the water from the Nevada River.

People are losing their homes because of water charges.

You'll have people ringing you in 10 years' time on Lifeline saying, we can't afford the water charges.

There's 15 companies dealing in the area, and it's not working.

So all I would like to see is a referendum...

on keeping water within state ownership.

Then you set a standard, an allotment of water per person, per household.

And then you say, if you go above that, you face a charge.

We have the meters.

We paid for the meters, 2.2 billion.

We paid for the infrastructure, billions.

We're still paying for it today.

I don't want to see it handed over like all our other infrastructural things over the years to private companies who then cream off the profit.

And we have poor people who can't pay any more bills already facing more charges.

So we need to have a system.

So just the key thing for me is referendum.

We keep it in public ownership.

We manage our own water systems.

And then, by all means, if there's excessive use, you pay a charge.
