Yeah, this year was a tough year.
Medicare Part B premiums, which pay for doctor's visits and outpatient care,
They went up by 14.5% over the past year for a variety of factors, some linked to the COVID crisis.
So next year, the good news for people on Medicare is that Medicare Part B premiums are expected to remain flat.
That's according to estimates published by the Medicare trustees.
So that would be very good news.
And the people who I speak to in the Medicare world say that they, in fact, think that that is what will happen.
So if there's no increase in Medicare premiums next year, then people can keep all of the Social Security COLA increased.
They don't have to use some of that to pay for higher Medicare Part B premiums.
So because people are taxed on a portion of their benefits, not everybody is taxed, but people who have sort of what's called combined income, and it's income plus half their social security benefits, plus some other sources of income.
But once that income for an individual is $25,000 or more, or for a married couple is $32,000 or more, those taxpayers have to pay
income tax on a portion of their Social Security benefits.
So the great news is that it's looking likely that Social Security recipients are going to get a pretty nice cost of living adjustment next year.
The bad news is that for some people, that's going to push them into this territory where some of their Social Security benefits are going to get taxed.
