I tie everything to either something has happened in the past or, you know, things that Defense Department games out in the future.

So you have an outbreak at a BSL-4 lab in Siberia, in Russia, because Russia still has a bioweapons program in violation of the treaty.

Very quickly, you got airborne, you got travelers, hunters, international businessmen in that area of Novosibirsk.

get on planes and they go to every continent but Antarctica.

There you have it.

It's spread.

And once it's spread, it's too late.

I show what the Defense Department, what the intelligence community is doing, you know, gangbusters to try to understand what this pathogen is, because until you know what something is, how do you try and defeat it?

And very quickly it arrives in the United States.

And then I show readers the plans in place

that the president has, that the biodefense council has.

And most interestingly to me was understanding that it's a bureaucratic nightmare, meaning you don't have the defense department in charge who essentially are kind of like go to it, get it done, say what you will about the DOD, but that's what they do.

You've got HHS in charge.

You've got CDC who reports to HHS.

You've got FEMA, you've got DHS, you've got all these organizations sitting around

the White House trying to organize themselves, their thoughts, and their plans.

And it all moves very quickly.

And by the time they decide what they can do, and by the time that USAMRID, the DOD's only BSL-4 lab at Fort Detrick, is able to identify the pathogen in my book as pneumonic plague, one of the scariest to all public health officials pathogens with 100%

Death rate, by the time they know that, it's too late.

Plague is, I mean, plague, Glenn, think about it.
