You know, his seat, he used to represent Lee, which is sort of the neighbouring constituency.

Actually, it overlaps.

with the newer constituency of Makerfield, where people do have different opinions about immigration than they do in London or in a city, Manchester.

And I think he is aware of that.

And so keeping Shabana Mahmood in that position is a signal

Maybe not so much to the country because I don't think people really know who she is or what she represents, to be honest, if you're just a normal person going about your daily life.

But it's probably more of a signal to the Labour backbenches.

I'm serious about these reforms.

We have to sound a certain way on immigration and I'm keeping her in place.

However, even under Starmer, there were a lot of hints

some directly from Mahmood herself, that they are going to water down some of the reforms, particularly the ones that are seen as so egregious on indefinite leave to remain and changing people's situation when they're already on a certain path to their status.

And so I wouldn't be surprised if we see quite a lot of movement there.

And also in the language, I think the language had also already started changing actually before Burnham became prime minister.

in terms of sounding a little bit more compassionate and less trying to ape reform rhetoric.

I think that's right, yeah.

So Pat McFadden stays in post as DWP secretary.

He's a sort of veteran Blairite.

He is someone who wants to try and get more welfare reform through, which means part of that would be cutting the bill.

He's also very committed to the Alan Milburn review on NEETs.

So this is nearly a million young people who aren't in education, employment or training.
