Like if he hit
free agency, he would have been doing so coming off of a really good season, followed by literally one of the best playoff performances we have seen in the history of the sport as an extremely marketable superstar in this game.
And within that context on the open market, I mean he might have gotten more than $500 million.
Like he might have gotten more than what he got from the Blue Jays.
Can you imagine the Mets, the Yankees, the Dodgers, like name your financial giant?
They all would have been lining up to pay this young, immensely marketable generational talent, and they would have created a very competitive market, which would have only driven up the price.
And I can
only imagine, like you think this media cycle has been insufferable.
I can only imagine the media cycle we would have endured at that point if Vlad was standing next to Steve Cohen's in Queens buttoning up a Mets jersey.
Like could you imagine?
So all that considered, like I just think that ultimately the contract is separate from how he is performing now, and we'd all be better off not conflating the two, like not bringing like just not bringing into this because the contract reflected Vat Vlad's value at that moment in time.

twenty twenty six, if they were negotiating now, obviously Vlad's difficult twenty twenty six would be reflected in those negotiations and he'd likely sign for much less.
But they aren't in negotiating now.
And everything that happened between the contract being signed and now is irrelevant to the contract value because it hadn't occurred yet when the contract was negotiated.
So
Best practice in my opinion is just leave the contract out of it.
Focus on what's happening in the present day, focus on how Vlad can be better in 2027, focus on what his offseason needs to look like to chase less, to hit fewer ground balls, to have a better quality of contact, to be more consistent, to stay healthier, to get over the physical issues, the mental issues that he's been dealing with this year, that he's spoken about.
Vlad's gonna be here for a long time.
