These are highly sophisticated networks that are in some ways as organized as any organized crime group in the world that are engaged in this type of activity, and they're stealing billions and billions of dollars.
Yeah, absolutely.
These campaigns direct victims to essentially fake platforms offering to pay them for sort of the gig economy, micro task, writing reviews, clicking on advertisements.
And they're shown fabricated account balances and earnings.
And then they're pressured ultimately to pay fees, deposits, or taxes to ultimately withdraw the funds.
So it's this whole idea of like, hey, there's all this money that we're paying you, but in order to actually get it, you have to send us money.
And I think, look, in this economy, in so many ways, people are looking for side jobs and different types of gigs.
And these often are sort of long-term schemes, right?
where the victim ultimately has the promise of sort of long-term payouts, but is having to pay funds along the way in order to get that payout, and then the funds just entirely disappear.
It really is, and I've spent so much time with victims, particularly in the pig butchering context, and these things could go on for months or even longer because you need to have a relationship.
You need to build trust.
And ultimately, trust takes time, especially when you're talking about potentially a romantic relationship.
And they'll have a back and forth over the course of months where you're asking about loved ones and you're getting to know each other, if you will, before that first ask is even ever made to send funds.
So it's absolutely a long game, but it's highly, highly sophisticated and targeted.
One really important piece to all of this is the use of AI in scams and fraud.
Over the last year, we've seen about a 500% increase in AI-enabled fraud and scams.
And what this really allows scam networks and scammers to do is really target specific victims with a targeted narrative, right?
It used to be sort of you send out a phishing email and you'd hope to cast a wide net.
There'd probably be broken English in there, right?
But now you're seeing deepfake videos.
