Yes.
So true.
Actually, you're never going to reach that finish line where that rest feels like you've truly earned it.
And that means that the operating system that you're running on sets up in such a way that rest is essentially impossible.
And when rest gets framed as something you have to earn by working hard first, people start treating it like a reward for good behavior.
Think about the way that we would teach a child about what good behavior looks like or teaching an animal, for example.
That's fundamentally what we would call a category error.
Rest is a biological requirement.
It is a need to have, not a nice to have.
You don't earn the right to drink water.
You drink because your body needs it.
And this is the same principle with rest.
that's so true it's really interesting because like I'm constantly reflecting on my relationship with rest as we're talking and it's fascinating because what you were saying around how we use rest as a reward system I've definitely done that and it's kind of you know everything comes back to our childhood right and how you know I witnessed the way that my parents were you know they they worked really hard and then they would rest as a reward so it's kind of like it gives us an opportunity to think about oh how was rest actually modeled growing up and matched
How do we actually start to change that? matched
Because it is hard when it's so deeply ingrained. matched
Exactly right.
And particularly when there is a sense that guilt and rest are connected together, they become learned responses, which can just make it so much more difficult to break away from that and see rest as its own entity.
Yeah, definitely. matched
It's interesting you actually talking about guilt because I was going to ask too, like, why do so many of us feel guilty or anxious during downtime? matched
