Because we're spending so much time thinking that we're wasting time instead of just recharging. matched
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
I think most of us absorbed that lesson, that guilt and anxiety during rest as a learned response.
We feel like it's a part of our wiring now, as opposed to something that was taught to us.
And as you said, Ashani, I can relate.
Growing up in a household where busyness is equated with a sense of virtue and
that carries a very early template and that template is stillness is suspicious and people who've spent years in really high pressure careers also absorb a very similar message at a workplace level too i think that there's a personal piece to this as well when you stop moving you have to be yourself
And for many people, there are so many feelings that come with sitting in that state of who we are and all of the feelings that we've been outrunning.
That might be grief, sadness, anger, frustration, dissatisfaction with how our life is.
And we haven't allowed ourselves the space to look at it because we kind of don't want to.
And so then rest actually feels threatening because it forces me to kind of face what it is and I'd rather not.
And so in that regard, busyness becomes a coping strategy as opposed to productivity one.
Yeah, wow. matched
When you talk about busyness, you know, and I know you've kind of started to talk about this around like matched
mental rest you know and how we really do need to take that time to unplug but my question is like how does the constant mental overload like the endless notifications or the endless to-do list where there's 20 new items that pops up like how does that trick our brain into actually taking real recovery? matched
I think that our brains have a really limited amount of focused attention that we can spend each day.
I like to think of one of the metrics as like a decision-making meter that you have at the beginning of the day.
It might be full, depending on how much sleep you've had or how much rest you've gotten.
And it depletes throughout the day.
And the sort of concentration that you'd need in that focused attention might look like being in a meeting or reading a complex email or decision-making, as I said.
