Hey guys, welcome to another episode of The Making of Podcast. I'm your co-host, Ashley Hoves. And I'm Brian, and I'm back. It's only been a few months. It has been a few months. Oh, what a few months. Before we get into that, do you want to describe where we are recording right now?
We are in the Centurion Lounge in Phoenix, passed up against the wall, enjoying life. Yeah, no, there are about 100 people surrounding us. Our flight home. So we were supposed to leave at 6 o'clock, and now our flight is delayed until 747. Which means that we have an hour and a half to record and to bring some beautiful content.
And I think it's pretty miraculous, the recovery that you had already. And it's only been how many weeks post-radiation?
Yeah, we're like eight, nine weeks right now. Eight, nine weeks. So just to put it into perspective, we met with the doctors, his doctors, the oncologist, the radiation oncologist, and his surgeon. And they were all pretty surprised that Brian wants to go back to work so soon. So they recommend waiting at least three to six months after radiation because that is when the cumulative effects of radiation start to diminish and decrease.
Keep recovering, but also to be able to really spend some time with myself, with the boys back in school, and try to just understand where we are and what this next stage of the journey is going to be. I'm going to push you to dive deeper into what you just said. So this forced slowdown made you reevaluate some things. Can you talk about what those reevaluations look like?
had to deal with a health crisis, whether it is yourself or a significant other or, heaven forbid, a child. It just, it really does force you to prioritize how you're spending your time. And I know that this podcast is all about building your dreams, building your startup. I think it, like for me, it really has given me a new filter to see what...
what is really going to fulfill me. So because Brian has been sick and because I have also been out of the practice, practices, it's like you wake up and you're like, man, I could walk away from all of this. And then I told Brian we went to dinner last night.
And I told him, I was like, you know, I already had a backup plan, like just in case things didn't go well. And I told him my backup plan and then he started to cry and I'm crying and then the server comes and asks us if we're ready to order. But I pray that you guys don't ever have to be in this situation, but it really is...
It's such, we get one life, we get one ticket. Like we just came from a conference and one of the keynote speakers was talking about how he has a book that he recommends. It's called The Regrets of the Dying.
And consequently, after reading that book, he has a framed ticket on his wall. And basically, that ticket is a constant reminder that we only get one ride. We only get one life. And how are you going to live it without any takebacks, do-overs? Yeah. I really was excited to...
to leave our nest, our little habitat, and just venture out and listen to speakers and meet other docs, because I think it's really important to get outside perspective, see what others are doing, and just clarify, like really take some time and focus on what
What's going to fulfill me? What is it like? It's not the P&L. It's like, what am I building? Who am I building it for? And why am I building? So I brought that that workbook. Do you want to talk about that workbook that you bought me a few months ago?
Yeah, it's impossible feels like a very appropriate way to describe how I think we've both been feeling these past few months. And I tell you what though, like going into a conference like this, spending time outside of the practice, outside of Folsom, away from our kids, I think it really validated
what we both love, which is the making of community and how important I think
That connection is, this was a very different style conference than what we throw, much bigger. And I told Brian, I said, my favorite thing about the entire conference wasn't necessarily the keynotes. I mean, they had amazing speakers, the content was great, talked about leadership and clarity and all of that, but
My peak, we go through peaks and pits. My peak was actually the conversations that I had with one of the docs who we met and I just picked his brain pretty much all weekend. And our retreat is very much that. Like we have speakers, but a good portion of that is taken outside of the classroom, so to speak, into excursions where we can
experience fun but also forge deeper relationships and I'm just excited to get back to that and I think it's important that we all have some kind of connection to each other that is not necessarily just through Facebook and Instagram.
I'm just going to, while Brian gets a moment to gather himself. One of our good friends, Richard Lowe, he surprised everybody and he walked into the conference. He wasn't really planning on attending, but last minute he was able to come and they actually pulled him up stage, on stage, impromptu. And he told a story of just what he had been going through these past couple of years and
And even though it wasn't necessarily a health crisis or a physical health crisis, he very much was vulnerable and shared just depression and walking away from a dream that you thought you had, you achieve it. And then it turns out it
it wasn't what you wanted at all and so we were both in tears and yeah it's I think it just goes to show you that no matter how successful someone is and especially like on from the outside looking in
