I know for me, when I had left Chicago and moved to Houston, we were in a predominantly white suburb.

And it took me a while to understand what Black joy was, even though I was little and even though there wasn't a lot of overt racism, it was still very clear that my differences weren't to be celebrated.

They were to be compensated for.

And as I got older and became more comfortable with myself and my identity, it just baffles me how much there is to celebrate that doesn't get celebrated.

I mean, particularly for those among us who were descendants from slaves, our whole legacy is about people who survived and didn't just survive, they created a whole culture that touches every corner of this earth.

To me, it's just so dope to have that in my genes.

I think about my mom and my grandmother and all these amazing black women who've just, in spite of it all, just shined in every way.
