And it also improves socialization.
So, you know, this was a, I think, a good example of where social connection can hit all of these different domains of health to improve people's well-being over time.
I think we should be striving for it.
So the UK has a national campaign to end loneliness.
And you know, I really think of this as an integrated national effort.
Um, so at all different levels, how can we address this complex challenge?
Um and I think uh in the US there have um been a number of
uh awareness um campaigns that have occurred.
So I think this National Academy of Sciences report that Carlo was a part of has helped to raise a lot of the awareness, especially among researchers, about loneliness and isolation.
You know, our surgeon general Vivek Murthy has taken this on as kind of a huge need.
He wrote a recent book.
Um about uh the epidemic of loneliness and um
provides a really detailed description of um many different scenarios that contributes to this and how we might be able to address this complex need.
But really I I think what it comes down to is we need to start valuing
Social well-being in a similar way that we value, you know, the treatment of disease and you know traditional medical symptoms.
Um, I think especially among older adults, where social well-being can be a core of people's overall quality of life, um, can impact health in so many different ways.
You know, perhaps this is this is a call, especially during the pandemic, this is a time where we should start thinking about how can we spend the money.
Um, some of the money that we're spending on healthcare, on social wellbeing.
How can we redirect to reprioritize some of those resources to think about people's overall health?
And I completely agree.
