Yeah, an easy way of summing up what the judge had to say is that this was never a legitimate case.
You know, basically she said it was an abuse of the court system to be bringing this case and trying to get a settlement out of that.
And that has to do with the basic way that this case came about.
Trump and his two oldest sons and the Trump Organization, which is his big business and includes businesses under it, basically sued the IRS, saying that the IRS
had failed to protect their tax returns because a contractor had illegally released not only their tax returns, but the tax returns from many thousands of taxpayers.
And they said that they were owed at least $10 billion because of this.
And before the DOJ had actually responded to this lawsuit in any meaningful way to say what its argument was, the case was dropped by the Trumps and the DOJ announced a legal settlement saying that, okay, in exchange for you dropping your case, we're gonna give you all these benefits.
The judge here said,
No judge ever reviewed this settlement.
Donald Trump controls the justice department.
So essentially he was both influencing his personal lawyers on one side of the case and influencing the justice department on the other side in order to get enormous potential tax benefits.
You know, all these people, him, his sons, his business were cleared of past
tax liability that they might have outstanding.
There's a New York Times report that suggests that as much as $100 million could be at stake for Donald Trump in one tax audit alone.
And also to get the creation of what was called the Anti-Weaponization Fund, a fund that could have given taxpayer dollars to people who were convicted of attacking police officers during the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
The judge basically said, you tried to use the court system to legitimize giving immunity to the president, giving immunity to the president's allies, giving immunity to people who are close to him, and that was not legitimate.
So you can't start referring to this as an actual settlement in court proceedings.
And basically, she also said that it involved ethical considerations for the lawyers involved, that they ever got involved in doing this.
That's right.
The judge was critical of Todd Blanche in particular.
